Good Value Laptops

desktop pcI’m not concerned about portability, so what are the advantages of a desktop??

  • Being self-contained units, when it comes to fixing the hardware when things go wrong, laptops are much more of a problem. Get the screwdriver out and take it apart and BANG! – You lost the screws as well as the warranty. With a desktop - take the chassis off, change a few boards, put it back together and you’re back in business. Needless to say you will more than likely have to send the laptop back to the manufacturer for repair – unless you live somewhere like Thailand where there are many ‘experts’ more than willing to prise the back off and get their fingers dirty. “Warranty – what’s that??”
  • Being a portable version of a desktop, the laptop contains smaller components needed to perform the same job. This miniaturisation process doesn’t come cheap and it is invariably the customer who pays the price. A state-of-the-art laptop with all the bells and whistles will cost three or four times the price of its desktop equivalent.
A desktop can be compared to a ‘hi-fi separates system’. You buy (or build) the right package to suit your needs and wallet and it is constantly upgradable. If your eyes worsen with age (or some other degenerative disease) you can swap that 17-inch 4:3 monitor for a 23-inch LCD widescreen one. Fed up with those tinny stereo speakers?? – Well, throw them out and replace them with Dolby Digital 6.1 and a subwoofer to loosen the foundations. With a laptop you don’t have that flexibility. You can change some things but you’re limited in your choice.
