CAN I BUILD MY OWN LAPTOP?

 

mac laptopIn an earlier section, I outlined why a laptop can be considerably more expensive than a desktop. There are naturally cheap laptops on the market, but if you take a close look, you will see that the hard drive size, CPU speed, amount of RAM etc., are of a low specification and the overall build quality is not up to a high standard – “You get what you pay for!!”.

 

Firstly, decide what you will be using the laptop for. There is a world of difference in component choice depending upon whether you are a high-end gamer or just the occasional letter-writer. Speed and graphics don’t count for much if you only intend using programs like Word and Excel (Microsoft’s document editor and spreadsheet system), but they are vitally important if you intend playing the latest video game on the market or decide that internet gaming is right up your street.

 

Now, in the same way you would put together a desktop system, you can likewise design your own laptop. The only difference here is that you can literally ‘build’ your own desktop system from its basic parts. By that I mean you can buy the chassis, plug in the motherboard and video cards, insert and wire up the hard drive etc. With a laptop (and the micro-surgery involved), you decide what you want it to contain and the company from whom you purchase it will assemble it for on your behalf. There are many companies on the internet that will do this. Bear in mind it will take longer to deliver because it is not an off-the-shelf purchase.
